Summer in Taipei…

In 2005, I’ve had the opportunity to go in Taipei for the summer. For those who don’t know yet, Taipei is the capital of the Republic of China, often called Taiwan. It’s a well-known place for all the geeks in the world, because most of the inner parts of a computer are built there…

One advice : don’t go there in the summer. Why ? Weather. Weather sucks there, period. If you’ve never been to a tropical city, you can’t understand how hard it is, but to make it short, two numbers should tell more : 38°C (100°F), and over 80% hygrometry. That means you’re never dry, you walk five meters and you look like you’re coming from a marathon. You’re waiting for the night to cool down your room ? Don’t even dream of it. At midnight, I’ve measured +30°C… Air conditioning is no luxury in that city !

But, if you can get over that awful weather, the place is really worth the trip. People is friendly, they never stop trying to help you, if you start pulling a map out of your pocket when you’re in the subway, there’s always someone coming to tell you how to find your way… that’s just a basic example, but that summarizes quite well how people behaves there. That’s astonishing, especially when you’re coming from our old Europe.

The city is impressive, it looks like they’re crushing every old building to build a 20-stories new one, and some parts of the town are completely new. The subway is perfect, and brings you everywhere you want, even to the beach, at Danshui, which might be the only place where the weather is fine (due to the sea winds).

That’s 13 hours of flight from here, but one more time : Taipei is worth the flight, the jet-lag and even the bad weather you have to endure !
